Monster Snows / Spring Break Skiing

tom's picture

What went from a marginal snow season is now back to close to normal or above normal snowpack.  Southwest Colorado and northern New Mexico have received feet of snow in the past couple of weeks making up for poor early season snowfall. The central and northern Colorado areas are doing well and are ahead of normal snow pack.  It all sets up well for the upcoming spring break weeks.

As folks who watched the recent ski racing world championships at Beaver Creek saw, it’s been warm and dry lately.  We’re finally getting a big storm on Feb 16th which will really help a lot. Most areas have been holding up pretty well but it hasn’t been very snowy in the past month and it has been much warmer than normal  Ski area bases have either remained the same or decreased since early January. There has been a big high pressure ridge pushing the jet stream north of the central and southern Rockies.

After a great start around Thanksgiving we had 2.5 weeks of warm and dry weather, and now the big snow has returned. Up to a couple feet at central and northern Colorado on Dec 21st  have created some great conditions at many destinations for the Christmas week.  Southern areas also received snow but not quite as much.  In most winters, it seems like the snow tends to come in a 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off pattern.

Monsoon rain have helped the fire danger in Colorado and increased mid summer river flows which is a great benefit for both the rafting industry and the fly fishing community.  My family rafted (see picture) the Royal Gorge last weekend and had a great time in the 600cfs flows, which will continue and provide fun trips for a couple more weeks.

Peak runoff is here!   Central and Northern Colorado received a ton of snow since March and with the recent warm weather river flows have come up to high levels, making for great rafting. The excitement should continue on those rivers for a couple months!    Southern Colorado and northern New Mexico rivers are up as well but since those areas didn't receive the big snows runoff will be lower and shorter.   Now's a great time to plan an exciting summer raft trip which can be combined with lodging or camping at most destinations!

Best snow of the week and weather outlook:  most of the Colorado  resorts got big snow this past week.  Several areas opened more steep terrain including the North Face Lift at Crested Butte and the Eagle Wind Chair at Winter Park.   While many areas still don’t have everything open it will probably only take one more decent storm to get the rest of the terrain open.  Up to a foot of new snow forecast for the Colorado Mountains
